Food Fact: A Sandwich By Any Other Name…

In 2006, a Panera Bread sued a mall for violating a “one sandwich shop per shopping center” clause in it’s leasing contract.

And just WHO was edging in on Panera’s turf? Well, it was none other than Qdoba Mexican Eats!

DUN DUN DUUUUUUUUUUN!

*record scratch*

What’s that you say? A burrito isn’t a sandwich. Hmm, but what about tacos? No? Well, what about quesadillas!? Those have to be sandwiches right? Wrong again. The court thought so too ruiling against Panera largely based on common sense as well as the Webster’s dictionary definition of a sandwich.

To be honest, I think Panera was the only party surprised, or rather disappointed, by the ruling of the case.
